Good to see lots of local businesses involved this year! It’s been tough so far getting everyone on board, Andrew has really worked hard to get this together- let’s hope for good weather!

We Are Whitby are part of the national Totally Locally campaign which originated in Calderdale. Designed by Chris Sands and Nigel Goddard, the scheme has taken off across the country and encourages local shopping by pointing out the economic and social benefits of investing in the local economy.

Whitby’s second Christmas Market will take place on Endeavour Wharf in the view of Whitby’s famous Abbey and Swing Bridge. The market will feature Whitby’s iconic beach huts, which will form an attractive and novel centre piece to the market. Whitby’s very own version of the German Market beach huts we are so familiar with.

The market will feature stalls from independent traders, artists, crafts people, hot food stalls and of course, a bar selling mulled wine.

We are Whitby hope that the event will highlight the fantastic range of independent traders we have in Whitby and that residents and visitors will be encouraged to do their Christmas Shopping here in Whitby rather than heading out of town.

Why queue for hours on the A64 or A171 when you could enjoy a wander around Whitby, take in a truly unique market, order your christmas dinner produce from local independent butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers, picking up unique gifts from a wonderful array of shops and enjoying a glass of mulled wine or mince pies and coffee by the sea.

All while supporting independent shops and life of the town centre of Whitby.

We Are Whitby are delighted with the enthusiasm for the initiative and the feeling from the community that they really want to shop locally and support their town centre and we are thrilled at the number and variety of shops right across town that have committed to staying open late and joining in with the initiative.

We really hope that residents of Whitby and the surrounding villages will consider making the pledge to shop locally this Christmas.

After all, money spent with local independent traders will circulate in the local economy, it will be used to employ local accountants, decorators, to pay for piano lessons, spent in local restaurants or other independent shops and will have a far more positive effect on our town than if it is simply driven out of town in a securicor van.[/ezcol_2third]

    Hi Guys,

I would like to give my huge congratulations in advance for such a fabulous idea, which I already know will be a success.

I’m only disappointed I can’t personally make it to the event but our guests have booked our cottage especially for this weekend!

Let’s hope this becomes an annual event.

If the Christmas market is for independent local traders then how come Hammond jewellers and cw sellors are taking park. They are both owned and part of the cw sellors jewellery chain based in Derbyshire.
The chain has shops all over the u.k .

That is correct. W.hammond and c.w sellors are indeed a chain based in Derbyshire with over 80 employees. They are not a locally owned business. I thought the whole point of the market was to help local businesses and independent traders ? Are costa coffee going to have a stall next year ?

There have been so many public meetings and invitations to get involved throughout the year, why not come along next time if you want to contribute 🙂
