In recent times I have come in for some criticism from photographers who were unhappy at being denied advertisement for their own photography businesses upon the social media groups I own and run.
As a means of clarification I have written this post.
I am a Professional Photographer and web designer. I have no other source of income. I make my living solely from photography and web design. It is far from the ideal job I assume many people think it is.
Selling photographs is hard and makes up only a small amount of my income. Probably one of the smallest parts of my income if Im honest. I know those in the same business will identify with this. Selling photographs in a saturated market is very difficult. Many people think they can take photographs, sell them and become mega rich. This is far from reality.
Part of my business strategy is to utilise my website and the social media groups and pages I have developed, to be able to sell my work. I built the social media groups with the full intention of utilising them for business promotion. That was 100% my goal for the majority of my social media presences.
To build those groups and pages has taken a mass of hard work. Many hours every day of the week, for many months and in some cases many years, to build a group with an audiance.
In return for my hard work I expect a return. That return is the ability to sell my services of web design, wedding photography, guest house photography, animal photography, family photography, and for me to sell my products.
I am not doing this for a Hobby, I have no other income, I am not incredibly rich (far from it). I have bills to pay, I have rent to pay and I have children to support. But I enjoy what I do and wish to carry on doing it for as long as I can. For this reason I protect my market place, part of which is my social media groups.
When people seek to use my groups to promote their business. IE, When they attempt to sell their photographs on my group, I liken it to Costa setting up a stall inside Starbucks Doorway and trying to sell Costa Coffee to Starbucks customers. Its never going to happen, they will kick them out the door faster than you can say “Swiss Family Robinson”.
The same applies to my social media groups and pages.
For some reason, some, and not all fellow photographers seem to take the hump because I wont let them sell in my groups. Many spend hours and hours of time trying to challenge my stance. However this wont change my position. I believe that all people in business have the right and ability to build their own social media groups and use them for their own business promotion. That includes you. So why not spend your time building your own groups ??
I would suggest that if you redirect your frustration with me, into building your own social media presence, then you will, in time, build your own platforms to sell from and to engage with your own customers from within.
If you wish to dedicate hours and hours of your time into challenging me on social media. It will only harm one person. That is you, as I will be focussing on my business and will not change my path.
I wish you all luck with your businesses, I really do. For the people I like and trust Im open questions to help you get your social media campaigns running well for you. For those wanting to employ me I am available to set up your websites and run your social media campaigns. Im here to be hired to help you.
I hope that clarifies things for you.
Best regards – Glenn Kilpatrick.
