Lack Of Maintenance Was Not The Cause Of Bridge Failure

A meeting to discuss the findings of two reports into the failure of Whitby Swing Bridge earlier this year, which was due to take place on Friday 1 October, will now take place on Monday 11 October to enable more of the interested parties to attend.

Two of the key findings of the reports are that:

  • The specification of the gearbox (the part that failed) should be well within the bridge operating parameters.  It is therefore suspected that a lack of maintenance was not the cause of the failure but a manufacturing flaw might have contributed to it
  • An inspection when the bridge was closed has suggested that any vibrations etc caused by traffic are not transmitted to the drive shaft and therefore are not thought to have contributed to the failure

The reports also refer to bridge refurbishment works carried out in 2002, which were undertaken on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council.

Cllr Peter Popple, Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Harbours and Land said: “As I have stated before, we commissioned two reports about the failure of the swing bridge.  Until very recently, we were awaiting the second report from a metal properties expert, which we have now received.

“We now look forward to discussing the ramifications of these reports when we meet next week and we will be looking at how we can work with North Yorkshire County Council in the future to minimise the risk of further problems.”

Anyone wishing to read both reports can find them on the council’s website via www.scarborough.gov.uk/whitbyswingbridge under the ‘Related Documents’ section, or by request to john.riby@scarborough.gov.uk

Not sure what the cause of the bridge problems are, but what I can tell you is that I was on there today, a bus came over when I was in the middle of the bridge and it felt like the whole thing was going to collapsed, nearly catapulted me onto the health food shop roof with that nasty looking polar bear.
