Whitby Abbey will once again be illuminated for half term week in October 2016. A chance to see the Whitby Abbey Illuminated and aglow with coloured floodlights highlighting the magnificent ruin that inspired Bram Stoker.

A fantastic event for all the family and one of the highlights of the events calendar here in Whitby. Cast light on a dark history! See Bram Stoker’s inspiration in a new light as Whitby Abbey is bathed in dramatic illuminations. As you explore its gothic splendour, our costumed characters will introduce the darker side of the past with tales of grave robbing and witch trials. You can also experience a live performance of Dracula to complete your visit. Halloween fancy dress is encouraged!

Due to a lack of mobility I use a wheelchair + I recived a lot of help from people in fantastic outfits I had my photo taken on the steps to the Abby with one woman who told me her costume took 6 months to make + I belive her as it was elequant + intercat in design. The weather on Saterday was mild, dry, with little wind so a very enjoyable day all round

My wife and I were very impressed with the lighting of the actual abbey, it was my first visit there in 59 years of visiting Whitby and it was very atmospheric.
However two other aspects were disappointing: the safety of walking around the grounds was very questionable and was an accident waiting to happen as steps, ramps and indeed, ground holes were not lit / highlighted. Secondly, I don’t believe that the content of the story-telling was very appropriate both from the point of view of lots of children being out on such a lovely evening and the fact that the stories were nothing to do at all with Whitby. The two ‘Edinburgh grave diggers’ had an audience of about 250 at one point but could hardly be heard (I was near to the front) or even seen – people at the back must have wondered what was going on. Come on English heritage – you can do better than this.
