Question – Every time we come to Whitby, my son Nathan Kendal asks me what is this pipe for dad ??, what is it’s purpose. I always have to say I don’t know, can anyone tell us what it was used for ? – Neil Kendal (Christmas Island, South Pacific).
The Real Whitby Answer – Dear Neil, Contrary to popular belief, the pipe is nothing to do with the old sewage pipe which runs adjacent to the pier. The pipe is in fact a chimney for the the community of tiny people who live under the rocks at the side of the pier. The community of tiny people used to live in the small cottages at the side of The Board Inn. The official word from the community’s spokesman (Big Bob) is they moved to the rocks after an influx of Holiday lets, tourists and second homers moved into the area. “It all got too much” said Bob, and “Those Goths and all their followers just meant we couldn’t get out for shopping twice a year, so we moved to the rocks, which is far more comfortable.” Bob added “We apologize if our chimney is an eyesore or distresses anyone, but in all honesty, there are worse things in life, like Fracking and Lidle’s own brand cheese slices”
